Ishraq

Ishraq is companion to Isolde, having been raised alongside her since childhood. Ishraq is a Moor and therefore a Muslim, brought back by Isolde’s father from his travels. With skin the colour of caramel, dark hair and brown eyes, Ishraq couldn't be more different to Isolde.

Wearing moorish dress, a long tunic over loose pantaloons with a long veil over her head held lightly across her face so that only her dark eyes are visible. The Arabic name Ishraq means sunrise – so another name that is suggestive of metaphorically bringing light to the dark.

Ishraq

Changeling Reading

“Behind her came her women companions, firstly Ishraq, her childhood friend, wearing Moorish dress, a long tunic over loose pantaloons with a long veil over her head held lightly across her face so that only her dark eyes were visible as she looked around the hall.”

Education

Ishraq has been educated in accordance with the traditions of her own culture.

She is able to ride and use a longbow. She has also been educated in medicine and anatomy at the Islamic centres of learning. She can fight with a dagger and is able to make grown men drop to the floor with her fighting skills.

Position

Although Ishraq enters the convent with Isolde, she refrains from Christian rites and retains her Moorish dress. Because she is of Moorish decent her position is not clearly understood by the other characters, who regard her as a servant or slave.

But this is not the status she has been assigned in the Lucretili household, her mother was a free woman and was honoured and respected by Isolde’s father who gave her a Christian burial when she died. Seven year old Ishraq was brought up by the Lord with Isolde but he allowed her to keep her Moorish name and cultural values.
